Police have registered a case against Assam legislator Gopinath Das for wrongfully confining a minor girl in Kamrup district .

The AIUDF legislature from Boko Assembly constituency has also been charged under POCSO Act. The authorities have, meanwhile, sent the minor for a medical examination.

Kamrup SP Indrani Barua said the parents of the girl — who was engaged as a domestic help at the MLA’s residence — had lodged a complaint against Das. A case under Section 343 of the IPC along with sections 4 and 5 of POCSO Act have been registered against him. While Section 343 of the IPC refers to wrongful confinement of a person, Section 4 of POCSO Act refers to penetrative sexual assault, a crime that may lead to imprisonment of up to seven years.
