After Baba Ramdev meeting, Haryana panel wants Sanskrit compulsory from Class 6

While SCERT oversees textbooks for Classes I to V, officials discussed how yoga, moral education and the teachings of the Gita could be incorporated in the syllabus for all classes.

Following a meeting chaired by Baba Ramdev, the State Council of Educational Research and Training, Haryana, has recommended that Sanskrit should be made compulsory in all schools under the state board from Class VI to XII.

The meeting was held at Ramdev’s ashram in Hardwar on May 14. The recommendations have been forwarded to the state education department.

While the SCERT oversees textbooks for Classes I to V, the officials discussed how yoga, moral education and the teachings of the Gita could be incorporated in the syllabus for all classes. According to the minutes of the meeting, the participants recommended that “Sanskrit Vigyan” should include the study of the Vedas, Upanishads, Bhagwad Gita, yoga, ayurveda, literature and grammar.

“A meeting was held in Hardwar… Some recommendations have been sent to the education department,” confirmed SCERT director Dr Sneh Lata.

“We had sought recommendations from Baba Ramdev. They will be examined… We would be emphasising on its (Sanskrit) use,” said Haryana Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma.

It was also proposed that yoga should be included in Hindi textbooks from Class I to V.
