9 NDFB(S) militants held, NIA director in Guwahati

The army offensive against NDFB(S) militants involved in the recent attacks in Kokrajhar and Sonitpur districts have started yielding results with security forces so far arresting at least nine militants connected with these incidents.

Confirming this, state Home Commissioner LS Changsan said while seven were arrested in the last two days, two more were apprehended on Tuesday. The security forces also recovered some arms and ammunition from the two who were picked up from near Tipkai in Kokrajhar district. Apart from these seven militants, the police have also arrested 78 persons found involved in related incidents, including arson and loot in the violence-affected areas.

Meanwhile, National Investigating Agency (NIA) director-general Sharad Kumar arrived in Guwahati on a three-day visit on Tuesday, in the wake of the agency taking over investigation of four of the 83 cases registered in connection with the attacks of December 23, followed by related incidents in the subsequent days.

The NIA chief, who held a preliminary round of discussion with top officials of the Assam Police and the state home department, later met Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. Kumar is scheduled to visit Sonitpur and Kokrajhar districts, where 44 and 34 persons, respectively, were killed in the recent incidents.

Meanwhile, the state government said that over 24,000 people left relief camps for their respective villages on Tuesday.

Five GNLA cadres held

The army and state police, meanwhile, arrested five hardcore militants belonging to the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) from near the Assam-Meghalaya inter-state boundary and recovered five pistols from their possession. An army press release said the GNLA militants were involved in extortion activities in the border areas of both states. The army on the other hand gunned down one KPLT militant near Hamren in Karbi Anglong district on Tuesday and recovered one M16 rilfe and some live ammunition from him.     ENS
