Underlining that the “country has suffered a lot due to terrorism”,Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on Sunday told the SAD in Punjab that there should be “introspection” if there was a threat of terrorism being revived in the state.

Shinde, who on Sunday visited the Attari Integrated Check Post (ICP) for the first time after taking over as Home Minister, was responding to media queries. “Whether they want to revive terrorism or not,it is up to them. This country has suffered a lot due to terrorism. I do not know whether they are reviving terrorism or not. If so,they should introspect,” he said in an apparent reference to the SAD,when asked about the state Congress’ allegations that the Bluestar Memorial, coming up at the Golden temple, could revive terrorism in the state.

He was accompanied by Punjab cabinet minister and SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia during his trip.

This comes at a time when the SAD-controlled SGPC had given its go-ahead for the memorial a few months ago. Sikh seminary Damdami Taksal has also been entrusted with the task to undertake the construction work. While SGPC maintains that the memorial would be in the form of a gurdwara only and not carry any photographs, the state Congress fears it would fan extremist tendencies.

Dedicated to those killed in the 1984 Army operation held to flush out militants from the Golden Temple, the memorial has come into focus after the recent assassination bid on Operation Bluestar commander Lt Gen (retd) Kuldip Singh Brar in London.

“It was unfortunate that Brar was attacked in London. I condemn increase in terrorism,” Shinde told reporters, ruling out that the government would seek extradition of Brar’s attackers from London.

Meanwhile, responding to a question on reports of Chinese incursions and transgressions in Indian side,Shinde — who came to Attari ICP after visiting Leh and Ladakh — said there might be a “few cases”. Saying that as per his information, the Chinese came and returned in the past,he added: “There is no infiltration. Our officers are very alert.”
