Sudhar,a small town some 25 kilometre from Ludhiana,is abuzz with the story of the resilience shown by an abandoned baby girl. Reportedly born to an unwed mother on Sunday, the girl was packed in a polythene bag and thrown into the canal — some eight kilometres away from the hospital, where she was born.

Children bathing in the canal, fished the packet out of the gushing waters believing it was a box of sweets.

From here, the infant, who by then was just a few hours old,was taken to a sheep herder,Tariq Ali,who rushed her to the local hospital.

SSP Ludhiana Rural Gurpreet Singh Toor said: “There is a saying jako rakhe sayian, maar sake na koi (when God keeps one,no one can kill him). This stands true for this baby girl who was left to die. But destiny had something different in store for her,who was saved by children. As if it was God’s will that there was this sheep herder just nearby who fed the child and took her to the hospital.”

The police have registered an FIR against unknown people on the statements of Tariq Ali. People in the area, however, claim that they are aware of who the mother is and who threw the infant into the river. They alleged that the baby’s mother was the niece of a SAD sarpanch. They also claimed that after the infant was born,a close relative of the mother threw her into the river.

Residents also alleged that the police knew about the accused but were under pressure. Hence,no arrests have been made yet.

When contacted,SSP Gurpreet Toor, said: “There is nothing like that. Our investigations are on. Dr Sanjeev Chopra, who delivered the baby,in his statement to us has named the mother, her parents and the village from where she comes. The doctor has lodged a complaint that the baby was taken away from the hospital without his knowledge.”

He added: “I have constituted a team, comprising a woman officer, who will speak to the mother of the baby. We have also preserved the DNA of the child to ascertain her parentage. The case is highly sensitive and we are trying to handle it as best as possible. The child has been adopted by Talwandi Dham and this too has come about because of our efforts.”
