The country’s largest ever industrial solar plant was put into operation in Ludhiana on Sunday. The plant is set to perform the twin functions of generating solar power and offering a permanent solution for the disposal of a large quantity of industrial effluent water by evaporating it.

Constructed in Kanech village, near Sahnewal,Punjab’s Non-Conventional Energy Minister,Bikram Singh Majithia said the solar thermal system had the capacity to evaporate 1 lakh litres of water per day.

Manufacturing process of various industries use up massive amounts of water which becomes unfit for human consumption. The water cannot be discharged into the ground as it can cause soil and water-table pollution.

To meet pollution control norms, waste water from chemical processes will be cleaned through a Reverse Osmosis (RO) system. The water will be evaporated by the thermal system and then condensed (leaving solid waste behind) so that it can be used again.
