A woman in Muzaffarnagar has accused her husband, who works abroad, of divorcing her over the telephone after she gave birth to a girl. Villagers of Niyamu village in Charthawal block, Muzaffarnagar, have rallied behind the woman, holding a panchayat Saturday and deciding to take legal help unless the man accepts his wife and daughter.

Asma Khatoon had married Shahnawaz Hussain of Gangedhi village around two years ago. Shahnawaz got a job in Saudi Arabia three months ago. This was after Asma had the baby girl. Asma alleged that her husband divorced her because she had failed to deliver a boy.

“We were chatting on the phone on October 1 when he started demanding dowry,” Asma told The Indian Express. “He abused me for giving birth birth to a girl, saying this had raised his expenses. When I protested, he said he was divorcing me over phone and disconnected the call.”

Liaquat Pradhan, headman of Niyamu village, said, “We will not let this happen. We will take the help of police as well as court.” Shahnawaz’s family could not be contacted for comment.
