Governor Ram Naik Saturday stoked a controversy when he stopped the national anthem midway while it was being played during the end of the oath-taking function for ministers at UP Raj Bhavan and instead administered the pledge of unity to mark the National Integration Day on the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
As the anthem was being played, Naik waved at his staff indicating that it be stopped and even verbally instructed his personnel to do so. The anthem was stopped midway, but triggered a controversy with questions being raised whether its tantamount to insulting the anthem.

“It is not proper to comment on Raj Bhavan. But the signals coming from Raj Bhavan are not up to the mark and pinches the hearts and minds of patriots. The national anthem was hindered. It must be deemed as an insult to the country, national flag, and Constitution,” cabinet Minister Azam Khan told PTI in Rampur.
The Congress demanded an apology from those responsible for the lapse, saying playing of the national anthem cannot be stopped mid-way.
In a damage control measure, the Raj Bhavan later issued a statement saying that the action was taken due to a minor confusion and there was no intention to insult the national anthem.
