Thane police have arrested a suspended police officer for allegedly shooting at an NCP leader who had filed a complaint of bribery against him last year. Inspector B R Ghatge, suspended since last year, was arrested in Kalyan on Friday.

According to police, Ghatge, attached to Bazarpeth police station, was suspended following a complaint lodged by local NCP leader Madan Darade in 2015.

Holding a grudge, Ghatge allegedly followed Darade’s car on Thursday night and stopped him on Andhar Wadi road.

The two exchanged some angry words, and then Ghatge allegedly fired at the latter.

Darade however ducked and the bullet hit his car. Crime branch officers arrested Ghatge yesterday and a local court remanded him in police custody till July 11, said inspector Shailendra Nagarkar.

He has been booked for attempt to murder and also under the Indian Arms Act.
