SOCIAL JUSTICE and Empowerment Minister Thaawar Chand Gehlot had an interesting story to tell MPs in the Lok Sabha about his attempts to help some beggars on the street. He said he once asked a beggar to quit begging, and promised him a job instead. The beggar wanted to know how much he would get per day, so the minister said he would earn about Rs 200. The beggar then replied that he could instead give Gehlot Rs 300 per day as his current income was more than Rs 1000 daily.
DAYS AFTER Chief Justice of India T S Thakur objected to blaming the judiciary alone for delay in deciding cases, another Supreme Court judge on Monday questioned a senior lawyer for complaining about a quick decision in his case. The lawyer said the case was decided by the Delhi High Court in just eight days. “When we don’t decide cases, we are blamed for delays. When we decide cases quickly, you still criticise us. That is completely unfair,” remarked Justice A K Sikri.
Missing in action
EVEN AS the Rajya Sabha got some work done on Monday, with the Railway Budget being passed in the evening, many members were missing from the House. There were only about 41 MPs present — just 19 on the treasury benches. The government’s floor managers were left struggling to gather MPs.
Collateral gain
FORMER IAF chief S P Tyagi’s questioning by CBI officials and the rising mercury outside had an unexpected outcome on Monday. Juice vendors outside the agency’s headquarters in New Delhi made a quick buck from mediapersons waiting outside. One of them claimed he had earned Rs 5,000 by afternoon, and was heard asking mediapersons about the next round of questioning.
