Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said that he would soon introduce a private member’s bill to seek more power for mayors and elected representatives. Tharoor was speaking at a function in Pune organised by the Pune Development Council for better power sharing arrangement of the elected representatives on Tuesday.

“We need to change our systems to provide more power to elected representatives. Although I am not sure about the outcome of the private member’s bill, but still one has to make an effort,” Tharoor said. His earlier efforts to introduce a private member’s bill to decriminalise homosexuality was not allowed by the present government.

Appreciating the Swachh Bharat Mission, Tharoor said that he had supported the mission as the issue of awareness was raised by none other than the Prime Minister. “While Pune seems to be an honourable exception, but our cities are filthy and need to be cleaned up. I was glad that the Prime Minister was talking about it,” he said.

Other than the government, the general public also has a responsibility which they cant shrugg off, Tharoor added. Public littering is a major problem for the country, he further said. Tharoor, who had carried out a beach clean-up drive in his constituency of Thiruvanantha-puram, said that citizens’ participation was one of the major aims of the drive.

“I realised the present government’s intentions were anything but sincere,” the Congress MP said, adding that he had written to the Prime Minister asking for various interventions to make the programme a success, but his letters remained unanswered.
