India’s decision to pull out of the 19th SAARC summit in Islamabad in November this year has prompted Bangladesh, Bhutan and Afghanistan to confirm on Wednesday their inability to attend the event, saying the atmosphere in the region was not conducive for talks to go on.

Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Syed Muazzem told the media on Wednesday that Pakistan is a part of the region and has to contribute to regional harmony. “It’s a setback. After Uri, we believe situation is not conducive to holding the summit,” he said.

Muazzem hoped that instead of contradiction, Pakistan comes to the path of co-operation. “We have tried to side by side promote sub-regional cooperation-Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal. We’d still like to continue with SAARC process  and hope there’ll be change and Pakistan comes to the path of co-operation instead of contradiction,” he further added.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs on Tuesday, it had said: “Increasing cross-border terrorist attacks in the region and growing interference in the internal affairs of member states by one country have created an environment that is not conducive to the successful holding of the 19th SAARC Summit in Islamabad”.

Pakistan termed India’s announcement as ‘unfortunate’ with the Pakistan Foreign Ministry spokesperson saying, “While we have not received any official communication in this regard, the Indian announcement is unfortunate… We will continue to work to that end in the larger interest of the people in this region,” adding that Pakistan remained committed to peace and regional cooperation.
