A man allegedly murdered his estranged wife and a local BJP leader, who tried to bring about a compromise between the two, at Jagraon on Sunday.
The victims were identified as Manjit Kaur (40) and Bidhi Chand (43), who was the block president of BJP SC wing in Dharamkot of Moga. Jaswant Singh (42) is the accused in the case.
The couple, married for 27 years, were living separately for a few years. Kaur moved to Moga, where she lived in a rented house that belonged to Chand.
A local court had earlier ordered Jaswant to pay her a monthly maintenance. Jaswant reportedly did not comply with the orders.
On Sunday, Jaswant allegedly sought a meeting with his wife. Chand accompanied her to his house.
According to the police, at Jaswant’s home, both were allegedly locked in a room and brutally murdered with axes and other sharp-edged weapons. The neighbours claimed that Jaswant’s father Dalip Singh, brother-in-law Angrez Singh and nephew Roop Singh also attacked the victims.
Police arrested Jaswant Singh, Dalip and Angrez but Roop Singh managed to escape.
Sub-inspector Ajay Raj Singh from Dakha police station said that an FIR under section 302 (murder) has been registered against Jaswant Singh and his family on the statement of Darshan Singh, brother of Manjit Kaur.
