Cricket has been an important part of our relations: PM Narendra Modi in Durban

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday addressed the civic reception in Durban which was jointly hosted by High commissioner and the Mayor of the Durban city. PM Modi said that he considered the public welcome given to him by the city of Durban as a privilege.

Stressing on the economic condition of India, PM Modi said, “India is undergoing an economic transformation. South Africa is one of the leading economy of Africa. Our economic partnerships is already substantial.”

Speaking on the passion of cricket that both Africa and India share, PM Modi said, “Being in Durban, if I don’t talk about cricket, it will be no ball. The passion and love for this game (cricket) runs deep in our society. Cricket has been an important part of our relations.”

The PM spoke about the racial discrimination that the Indians had to face. He said, “The sufferings of early generations of Indians under the apartheid and colonial rule are well known.”

He added, “You have not just honoured me but have also recognised 1.25 billion of my countrymen. Durban is the largest Indian city outside India. It is home to the largest population of people of Indian origin in South Africa. The history of our people to people ties provides a strong foundation for future partnership.”

He concluded his speech saying, “In our inter-dependent world India’s growth story is one of the brightest spots.”
