Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, in a major reshuffle of his ministry Saturday, divested Pankaja Munde of the important Water Conservation Ministry, while Vinod Tawde was stripped of the Medical Education portfolio.
Fadnavis conducted a reshuffle late Saturday night, making course corrections and restructuring portfolios for “effective administrative management”. He ensured that ministers whose ministry had landed in controversies were given different portfolios.
Ministries were also allocated to ministers who were sworn-in Friday. Munde retains the crucial ministries of Rural Development and Women and Child Development, and Tawde, along with the existing portfolios of School Education, Higher and Technical Education, Culture and Sports was handed the Ministry of Minorities and Wakf.
Senior minister Chandrakant Patil was given the important Ministry of Revenue, held by former minister Eknath Khadse, who had to resign following corruption charges. Patil retains the Public Works Department. However, the Ministry of Cooperation and Marketing has been taken away from Patil and awarded to newly inducted BJP minister Subash Deshmukh.
The Ministry of Agriculture, which was also held by Khadse, had been awarded to Pandurang Phundkar.
Water Conservation portfolio has been awarded to Ram Shinde.
The low-profile Girish Mahajan, a staunch rival of Khadse in north Maharashtra, has been rewarded with the additional portfolio of Medical Education, which was divested from Tawde. Mahajan will continue with his original Water Resources Ministry.
