Bihar Chief Minister and Janata Dal (United) president Nitish Kumar is set to renominate former party chief Sharad Yadav and his own close confidant Ramchandra Prasad Singh as party candidates for the biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha, sources disclosed Wednesday. A formal announcement in this regard will be made soon, the sources added.

Five of the 16 Rajya Sabha seats from Bihar are scheduled to be filled afresh. All of them — Sharad Yadav, Ramchandra Prasad Singh, K C Tyagi, Pavan Kumar Verma and Gulam Rasool Balyawi — belong to the JD(U). However, the party is in a position to bring only two people to the Upper House. RJD can send two and the opposition BJP, one.

The election, in a way, does not offer any choice to Nitish as far as the selection of candidates is concerned. He can pitch in for only two slots. There is no way he can deny a Rajya Sabha berth to Yadav, considering his stature. Singh, on the other hand, enjoys Nitish’s confidence like no one else.
