Minutes after killing her two minor daughters and toddler son by lacing their food with insecticide, a Dalit woman committed suicide by consuming pesticide in Nabarangpur district of Odisha.
The woman, from Dongariguda village under Koshagumuda block of Nabarangpur, tried to set her residence on fire after her 8-year-old and 6-year-old daughters, apart from her two-year-old son, died immediately after consuming the food.

The woman’s husband Dhaniram Harijan, who works as a mason in Chhattisgarh, arrived at his village Tuesday, said Saroj Upadhyay, inspector-in-charge of Koshagumuda police station. “We have no idea why she took this step. We are still investigating,” he said.
In a similar incident last week, a Puri-based woman attempted to commit suicide after poisoning her 9-year-old and 12-year-old sons over a family quarrel. Basanti Parida was frustrated over quarrels with her husband. She survived the suicide bid.
