Mizoram CM Lal Thanhawla’s younger brother Lal Thanzara, who quit as a Minister of State and MLA in August over a media expose that he held shares in a company his brother gave several contracts to, will contest the November by-poll to the seat he vacated.
State Congress Vice President R Lalzirliana announced Monday that Lal Thanzara will contest the by-polls scheduled for November 21 during a meeting at Congress Bhavan.
Lal Thanzara meanwhile said he was confident of winning back the Aizawl North 3 seat, saying most local opposition party leaders have already joined the Congress since he quit.

An expose by online news portal Scroll.in had, in June, reported Lal Thanzara’s shareholding pattern in Delhi-based Sunshine Overseas: the MLA and then Parliamentary Secretary had held almost 5 lakh equity shares at a time his brother the CM awarded the company several contracts through the state PWD. The firm’s income almost tripled during the time Lal Thanzara held shares in it, and its profits rose more than 11 times, according the the media report.
Opposition parties in Mizoram had demanded Lal Thanzara’s resignation over the issue, which he did. But he also denied any wrongdoing and claimed he did not know he held shares in the company.
