FOLLOWING A meeting with Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, during which she “regretted” the ban on publication of newspapers in the Valley due to a “communication gap”, newspaper editors and owners Wednesday decided to resume publication.
Soon after the meeting with the Chief Minister, editors and owners of print publications met in Srinagar and decided that their printing presses would start again Wednesday night.
“Although there has been no deliberate attempt on part of the government to impose any restriction on publication of newspapers, whatever has happened, because of some communication gap, is regrettable,” she said. “Complaints of highhandedness against the press, if any, amid the prevailing situation will be looked into.”
The editors said that the CM “regretted and apologised for the situation created by a law and order-related decision unintended at newspapers”. “The editors considered the government response and decided to resume publications from today, hoping the resumption will remain unobstructed,” said Masood Hussain, editor of Kashmir Life, an English weekly from Srinagar.
