The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Jharkhand government over allegations of targeted attacks on Muslim cattle traders in the state.
The Commission had received a complaint on March 29 that there had been several incidents of targeted attacks on the Muslim cattle traders in the state and that the administration was not handling in a “fair manner” the case of lynching of two cattle traders in Latehar district of Jharkhand on March 18, said an NHRC statement.

In the notice to the Jharkhand Chief Secretary, the state government has been given four weeks’ time to submit a detailed report. According to the complaint, the angle of personal dispute, being put forth by the administration as the reason behind the incident, is for “protecting and defending” the so-called groups of cow protectors, who are targeting minority communities.
The compensation of Rs 1 lakh announced for the families of the two deceased, Imtiyaz Khan and Majlum, is “inadequate” as they lost their sole bread earners, the statement said. It is said that the traders were taking their cattle to a fair when they were stopped by a mob, beaten up and hanged.
