A woman, reportedly in her 30s, was admitted to the hospital after she, along with her family, was allegedly beaten up by TMC councillor of ward 11 of Habra Municipality, Goutam Biswas, and his followers in North 24 Parganas district on Sunday.
The incident took place in Habra area when local resident Anupam Saha was travelling in a cycle van with his wife, son and sister-in-law. According to eyewitnesses, their vehicle hit a Tata Ace Magic, which stopped suddenly, and two passengers on the cycle van fell down. When Saha confronted the driver, he said he had to apply the brakes because the motor vans in front of him had halted all of a sudden.
Saha went towards the motor vans on which Biswas was travelling. A fracas broke out between the two of them and it was alleged that Biswas and his supporters attacked Saha and his family members, causing serious injuries to his sister-in-law. They fled the scene, leaving the woman bleeding profusely from the nose, eyewitnesses claimed.
The injured woman was taken to Habra hospital, but as her condition deteriorated, she was shifted to a private hospital and later admitted to the ICU.
A police complaint has been lodged by Saha against Biswas in this connection. Biswas admitted to the complaint, but brushed aside any involvement in beating up the girl. He, too, lodged a counter complaint of harassment against Saha and his family.
Nilimesh Das, chairman of Habra Municipality, said he was aware of the incident. “I have heard of the incident and the verbal duel, but from what I had heard, the girl had been attacked by Biswas’ followers and not by him. Nevertheless, it is condemnable that a girl from my area was beaten up and hospitalised. Police are looking into the matter, and we hope the offenders will be brought to book soon,” Das said, talking to The Indian Express. He added that he would visit the victim at the hospital on Monday.
