BJP president Amit Shah on Sunday held discussions with the leadership of the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Sangham Yogam (SNDP) — an influential caste organisation representing the Ezhavas in Kerala — on accommodating its nominees in the coming elections to the state’s local bodies.

Shah was in Kerala to attend the 62nd birthday celebrations of Mata Amritanandamayi at her Kollam mutt. Along with BJP leaders from Kerala, Shah met SNDP general secretary Vellappally Nateshan and his son Thushar Vellappally, who is the vice-president of the Ezhava outfit.

According to BJP sources, Shah has directed the state leaders to “Hinduise Kerala politics and politicise Kerala Hindus”. The party is looking forward to the emergence of a pro-BJP bloc of backward communities, led by the SNDP.

“A section of the SC outfit, Kerala Pulayar Maha Sabha, and the body representing fishermen, the Deevara Sabha, have expressed their intention to join hands with the BJP,’’ sources claimed.

The SNDP leadership, meanwhile, is understood to have demanded tickets for its nominees in the Ezhava community strongholds.

“Neither the CPM nor the Congress can address such a demand from the SNDP. However, the BJP has enough room to accommodate the SNDP demand. The BJP may give 25 per cent of seats in local body elections to the nominees of the backward communities, including the SNDP Yogam,’’ said a BJP source.

BJP sources also added that the party was gearing up for Hindu-centric campaign.

“In various districts, the BJP has started the process of identifying the areas where the SNDP Yogam has an influence. Further discussions will be held about the nitty-gritty of fielding SNDP representatives as candidates in local body elections.

Since scores of grassroots level CPM leaders have joined the BJP, this time the electioneering would be led by these leaders who know the tactics,’’ claimed sources.
