The dawn-to-dusk hartal called by LDF in Kerala to protest against the crisis in the cooperative banking sector due to demonetisation was near total in Kerala on Monday.
Offices, business establishments and educational institutions remained shut. Passenger buses, including those run by the state undertaking, taxis and other vehicles kept off the road.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and his Cabinet colleagues kept away from their offices, while banks functioned with thin staff.
The state government had exempted the tourism sector from the agitation. All departments had been issued instructions to mitigate hardships of tourists.
Although Opposition Congress had joined hands with the ruling CPM in protesting against the crisis in the cooperative sector in the wake of currency crisis, it did not support the hartal. Instead, party legislators took out a protest march to the Raj Bhavan.
