Militants attacked the rear office of the infantry battalion force in North Kashmirs Uri town early Sunday morning. After a round of intense firing, seventeen army jawans and four militants were killed. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the incident and said that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.
Initially, the Indian Army, while confirming the attack, had clarified that it was not clear whether the militants have attacked brigade headquarters or any other security installation. The rear office is where the battalion’s administrative work is conducted.

Injured military personnel had been shifted in choppers to Army’s 92 base hospital in Srinagar. Army’s northern infantry divisional commander based in Baramulla was monitoring the operation. The entire town has been sealed and security on the vital roads connecting Line of Control(LOC) has been beefed up.
Army has sent three choppers from army’s 19 divisional headquarters in Baramulla to Uri. Officials said the militants responsible for the attack could have crossed the LOC during night. Uri town is located close to LOC and is barely few kilometres from some place. The attack,however, has left officials surprised as the there is heavy presence of army in and around URI town and on LoC.
The attack comes two years after militants had stormed a camp in Mohra in Uri -15 kilometres away from Sunday’s attack. “Army has told us that eight army personnel are injured in which two are critical,” a senior police officer told The Indian Express. He said the attack took place at 5.15 am. There has been no firing since 6 am. Uri market has been closed.
