Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa Wednesday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking resumption of commercial operation of Kudankulam Unit-I, which has been shut for 90 days for maintenance work.

“I request you to kindly instruct officials concerned in the NPCIL to immediately take necessary action to recommence power generation in Kudankulam Unit-I,” she wrote, pointing out that the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) had not indicated the status of maintenance work as well as the date of recommencing operations.

The Kudankulam nuclear power plant, which started commercial operations in December 2014, has been shut since June amid protests by activists who alleged major flaws in its
installation.
