Days after Amar Singh, who was recently reinducted into Samajwadi Party (SP) and elected to Rajya Sabha, accused some party leaders of “humiliating” him and former SP MP Jaya Prada, the Akhilesh government has appointed the actress-turned-politician as senior deputy chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh Film Development Council. Sources also said that she is likely to get a ministerial rank.

Renowned poet Gopal Das ‘Neeraj’ was recently appointed chairman of the council, before which there had been reports that Prada was being considered for the position.

The council is an advisory body which suggests to the state government ways and means to promote film production-related activities in the state.

“Jaya Prada has worked in films and could give valuable advice for production-related activities,” said a senior government official from the information department.

Amar Singh and then Rampur MP Jaya Prada had been expelled from the party in February 2010 on charges of anti-party activities, after which Singh had established his own party — Rashtriya Lok Manch.
