A toxic gas leak on board INS Vikramaditya killed two persons on Friday. Here is a look at some of the major naval accidents in the recent years:
August 14, 2013: A huge explosion ripped through the torpedo compartment of INS Sindhurakshak, docked off Mumbai coast. Fifteen sailors and three officers were killed in the accident. Reports say that minor explosions occurred around midnight triggered two large explosions.
February 2013: A major fire broke on board INS Sinduratna submarine during trails which resulted in the death of two officers after inhaling smoke. Seven sailors were reportedly injured and airlifted to a naval base hospital. An inquiry by the naval board led to the resignation of the then Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) Admiral D K Joshi on February 26.
Three accidents in one month:
December 2013: INS Konkan, a minesweeper under the Eastern Naval Command, caught fire at the naval dockyard at Visakhapatnam while undergoing repairs. The fire engulfed much of the ship’s interior before it was put off. However, no casualties were reported.
December 2013: In another incident , INS Talwar, a lead ship of the Talwar class frigate, collided with a fishing trawler injuring four of the 27 people aboard the trawler. The captain of the ship was reportedly stripped of command subsequently.
