Kaleem Ahmad, the Aligarh Muslim University student who suffered injuries, reportedly in celebratory firing on the campus after the India-Pakistan T20 match on March 19, has lost vision in both his eyes, doctors at AIIMS said.

On Tuesday doctors performed a surgery to close the lid of his right eye, an irreversible procedure done when vision is lost to ensure that there is no spread of infection in the body.

Ahmad has also been put on a high dose of steroids and antibiotics to control the spread of any type of infection.

Dr Sushma Sagar, additional professor in surgery at AIIMS said, “There are a lot of pellets in his eyes and head. When he came, there was no vision in both his eyes. Our ophthalmologists said there was less than 1 per cent chance of recovery. So, we have covered the lid of his right eye.”

Doctors said if the eye was left open, there are high chances of Ahmad contracting an infection. “He has zero vision even in his left eye. We will decide the next course of action in a few days. It is unlikely that he will recover vision even in this eye, according to our ophthalmology specialists,” Dr Sagar said.

She added that none of his other pellet injuries can be operated upon. “There are multiple pellets in his brain but operating on them is very risky,” she said.

Ahmad (25) was reportedly shot in the head when he was protesting against celebratory firing on the campus after the India-Pak match and a gun accidentally went off.
