With the BJP leaving no stone unturned in wooing Hindu organisations and voters in Kerala, and many of those voters said to be from the traditional Left vote bank, the CPI(M) also seems eager to jump on the religious bandwagon to stop the Sangh Parivar from “hijacking” it.

In perhaps a first for a senior CPI(M) leader, Politburo member Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday was the chief guest for a programme at Hindu Parliament, an umbrella body of 110 Hindu outfits in the state. Inaugurating a seminar on “Hindu community and secularism”, Vijayan said he had agreed to participate on the organisers’ assurance that they would stick to secular principles. Stressing that intolerance is growing at the cost of secularism, Vijayan said in Kerala, the BJP and the Congress are heading for an unholy nexus for a few seats and some votes.

He claimed that the Sangh Parivar is striving to take Hinduism back to its dark days and to control the religion as its own. “Believers should be vigilant against the attempt to hijack faith and belief,” he said. When temples are converted into places to stash weapons, he told the audience, true believers should remain cautious.
