DRI seizes cigarettes imported in the guise of metal scrap from Mundra port

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence has (DRI) seized 60 cartons of foreign-made cigarettes worth lakhs of rupees and which were imported in the name of metal scrap at Mundra port on Kutch coast, officials said on Thursday.

Acting on a tip-off, DRI officials of Gandhidham checked two containers unloaded at Mundra port on Wednesday.

However, on opening the containers, 60 cartons of cigarettes were found stocked in them. Officials said the cartons had 25 lakh foreign-made cigarettes with its market value estimated in lakhs.

Sources said that the Gandhidham-based agency had imported the metal scrap on behalf of Krishna Brass, a brass-parts manufacturing unit based in Jamnagar.
