A 16-year-old state-level junior athlete who was travelling in a train died after his head hit a pole in Jharkhand’s Dhanbad district on Wednesday.

According to the police, Vivek Kumar Baitha, a resident of Morabadi in Ranchi, had gone to Assam along with a 60-odd member contingent of the junior athletes to participate in the eastern zone inter-state competition for the juniors. He had participated in sprint events.

On Wednesday, the entire squad was traveling by Kamakhya Express and was on its way to Ranchi. “When the train crossed Kumardubi railway station and was about to reach Mugma near Dhanbad, the boy got hit by pole on the side of the railway track. His co-passengers felt that somebody has fallen off the train. They pulled the emergency chain and walked back to the spot only to find Baitha dead. His family members have been informed,” said Railway Superintendent of Police (Dhanbad) Asim Vikran Minj.

Baitha, along with coach and other team-mates, was traveling in S-1 Coach. His mates have told the police that he was standing at the entrance gate and was probably leaning outside, when the incident occurred.

Initial investigations indicated that a metal rod was protruding slightly from the 10th pole of stretch No. 235. “However, it appears that even that protruding metal was quite far and the boy must have leaned a bit too much, due to which he got hit. Meanwhile, a formal complaint has been lodged on an application from his coach and investigations are on,” said Minj.
