The churning in the Congress triggered by the setback in the recent state elections deepened Monday, with senior leader Satyavrat Chaturvedi demanding “cardiac surgery”. This comes days after AICC general secretary Digvijaya Singh said the party needed “major surgery”. Meanwhile, at an AICC briefing, party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said there is no gag order against suggestions, provided they are not aimed at destabilising the party by giving a “unifocal look” at the leadership issue.
Chaturvedi, Congress chief whip in Rajya Sabha, belongs to Madhya Pradesh, like Digvijaya, and appeared to be taking potshots at the former CM. “Those who are talking of surgery needed to introspect as because of them the party has come to such a pass…. Cardiac surgery is necessary. The party has to think about those people under whose leadership the party had to face such a defeat,” he said. It is known that there is no love lost between the two leaders from MP.

Former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Ajit Jogi told The Indian Express that though he more or less agreed with Singh’s suggestion about the need for an overhaul, the AICC general secretary should have offered the suggestions to the Congress Working Committee.
Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor, meanwhile, met Congress president Sonia Gandhi. Later, Tharoor said the party leadership has taken the election results very seriously and is determined to move forward with constructive and positive action.
