The Aam Aadmi Party’s student wing Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS) has decided not to contest the Delhi University Student Union elections this year citing uncontrolled use of ‘money and muscle’ power in colleges.

The student body will instead be protesting against these irregularities and campaign for proper implementation of Lyngdon Committee recommendations for university elections.

Speaking to IndianExpress.com, CYSS Delhi secretary Anmol Panwar said: “The non-student entities are the biggest threat to safety during varsity elections because they get involved in violent activities and the authorities don’t take any action against them.”

“At the state and national level, political parties can approach the election commission and action is taken. But in DU, action is not taken even if we approach the authorities. If any such mechanism is put in place then we will definitely contest elections,” Panwar added.

However, the CYSS leader said the body is still deciding upon whether they should contest in the college level elections or not.

The AAP student wing had contested in DU elections last year, but failed to bag any of the four posts. All the four posts went to BJP’s student wing ABVP.
