Chhattisgarh Police claimed Tuesday that at least five Maoists were gunned down in an encounter with security personnel in the Kistaram police station area of Sukma district. Police added that five security personnel received injuries in the encounter.

Senior police officers said the encounter took place near Tetemadgu village and the exact number of rebels killed could not be ascertained, as the Maoists dragged their bodies into the forest. They added that the five injured constables have been flown to Raipur for treatment and were out of danger.

Sukma ASP Santosh Singh said, “Late last night, 250 personnel of the STF and the District Reserve Group had entered the forests. In the afternoon, around 3 km from Tetemadgu, a large group of Maoists with nearly 150 rebels opened fire on the security personnel. We suspect that several Maoists were killed in the encounter. Our jawans suffered minor injuries while they were trying to prevent the rebels from dragging away the bodies.
