Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Wednesday reassured his Maldivian counterpart, Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon, of India’s unwavering commitment to enhancing the defence capabilities of the island nation.

He reiterated India’s readiness to provide defence platforms, equipment, and other assets tailored to the Maldives’ national priorities, aligning with New Delhi’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and the vision of SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region).

“India will continue to support the Maldives and the Maldives National Defence Force in their capacity-building efforts through projects, equipment, and training,” Singh stated during their bilateral meeting in Delhi.

A readout by the Ministry of Defence reaffirmed the mutual reaffirmation of both nations to work closely toward realising their shared vision of an India-Maldives Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership. “As a trusted partner and close friend, I assure you that India will continue to support the Maldives in its developmental aspirations and the welfare of its people,” Singh said.

Singh hosted Minister Maumoon for wide-ranging talks to strengthen bilateral defence ties. The discussions covered a range of issues, with a focus on maritime security cooperation. In a post on X, Singh said, “Held fruitful talks with Maldives Defence Minister Mr Mohammed Ghassan Maumoon in New Delhi. Today’s discussions will add new vigour to India-Maldives relations.”

This meeting comes in the backdrop of strained relations between the two nations following the election of Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu in November 2023, known for his pro-China leanings. Shortly after taking office, Muizzu called for the withdrawal of Indian military personnel, a process completed eight months ago when Indian troops were replaced by civilian personnel.
