Actor and Union minister Suresh Gopi on Sunday said his income has reduced considerably since becoming a minister, and that if the party dropped him and made BJP Rajya Sabha MP Sadanandan Master a central minister, it would mark a “new history in Kerala politics”.
Inaugurating Sadanandan Master’s MP office in Kannur, Gopi, who is the BJP’s only Lok Sabha MP from Kerala, expressed his intention to become more active in films. “My income has reduced considerably (after becoming minister)… I am much younger in the party. I had taken membership in the BJP only in October 2016… I am saying sincerely that if the party makes him (Sadanandan) a minister after dropping me, that would mark a new history in Kerala politics,” Gopi said, after which he urged party workers to clap.
Gopi said that he prayed that Sadanandan’s MP office would soon become a minister’s office. “I have not prayed to become a minister. Even on the eve of the election, I said I wanted to continue in cinema. I want to make money. My children are not yet settled. There are a few people who have reposed their faith in my income. If a section of them has to be taken care of, this income should not stop. At present, it (income) has stopped considerably,” he said.
During the 2024 Lok Sabha election campaign, one of Gopi’s major planks was “a Union minister for Thrissur, Modi’s guarantee”. He won the election and became the BJP’s first Lok Sabha member from Kerala. He was then inducted into Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Council of Ministers as a Minister of State. However, soon after becoming a minister, Gopi said this was not part of his plan.
Months later, addressing an event at the Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce in Thiruvananthapuram, Gopi said that films were his passion. “If there is no film, I will die. I have agreed to act in around 20 to 22 films. When I was asked how many films are pending, I told (Union Home Minister) Amit Shah that I have agreed to act in around 20 to 22 films, he (Shah) threw away that paper… I will always obey my leaders. But film is my passion, otherwise I will die,” he said.
