‘If you want to stay alive…’: Madhya Pradesh judge gets threat letter seeking Rs 500 crore

Police said the threat letter, sent through Speed Post from Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh, landed in the court of a Civil Judge in Rewa.

A sitting judge in Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa district has received a ransom note demanding that he pay Rs 500 crore, warning that if he wanted to “stay alive”, police said.

Police said the threat letter, sent through Speed Post from Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh, landed in the court of a Civil Judge in Rewa. However, the police have not revealed the name of the judge due to security concerns.

The letter had said that the ransom should be delivered to the Badgad forest in Uttar Pradesh at 7.45 pm on September 1. According to a police officer, the note said, “If you want to stay alive, you will have to pay the money.”

Upon coming to know about the matter, Superintendent of Police Vivek Singh immediately set up a special investigation team, which has identified the suspect. He said that Madhya Pradesh Police teams have been dispatched to Uttar Pradesh to apprehend the accused.

“The judge has received a registered mail containing a threat and a demand for Rs 500 crore. On the basis of the letter, we have formed a team for investigation; a team has also been sent to UP. A suspect has been identified,” Singh said.

A case has been registered under Section 308(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The section deals with extortion by threatening to falsely implicate someone in a grave offence.
