Manipur police arrested four police officers and one other person in connection with the alleged snatching of arms from an escort provided to Thangmeiband MLA Khumukcham Joykishan Singh.

Police said the five accused were arrested Wednesday during a major operation and recovered three Self-Loading Rifles (SLR) along with four magazines with 80 live ammunition.

The four police personnel have been identified as Meisnam Krishnadas (57), Maibam Shanjit Singh (34), Longjam Jayenta Singh (52), and Oinam Banti Singh (30). The civilian arrested, Mainam Bomcha (45), is a caretaker for a farmhouse belonging to the MLA. While it is not clear whether the five accused were directly involved in the incident, a local court remanded them to 10 days of police custody for further investigations.

On Tuesday night, armed miscreants snatched three self-loading rifles and four magazines from security personnel for MLA Joykishan Singh in Imphal West district.

The incident occurred around 8 pm at the Thangmeiband MLA’s farmhouse in Likinthabi under the Sekmai police station when he was not present. The thieves allegedly overpowered the security personnel while they were having dinner. Police said they also recovered arms and ammunition from Sekta Awang Leikai in Imphal East in Wednesday’s operation.
