The Border Security Force have apprehended a father-son duo who allegedly tried to cross over to the Indian side at the India Pakistan border on Wednesday via Rajasthan’s Barmer.

The forces apprehended Kanji Bhil, about 47, and his seven-year-old son Chaman at zero point on Wednesday afternoon. The two were subsequently handed over to local police in Barmer’s Sedwa after preliminary questioning.

Officials said that Kanji hails from Tharparkar district in Pakistan and has claimed that he has had relatives living in Barmer, while some reports claimed that Kanji was fleeing religious persecution.

However, Barmer Superintendent of Police Narendra Singh Meena told The Indian Express that questioning by the Joint Interrogation Committee (JIC) is underway and will make things clearer. The JIC includes officials from multiple agencies.

Following the hostilities across the international border after the Pahalgam terror attack, the security forces and agencies have been keeping a close watch in the border districts and beyond. In Jaisalmer itself, at least four people have been arrested for alleged espionage activities this year.
