    Gaza ceasefire comes into effect

    The Israeli military on Friday said that a ceasefire has come into effect in Gaza. The Israeli military also confirmed that its forces were withdrawing to new deployment lines in accordance with the peace deal. The ceasefire came into effect after the Israeli cabinet approved “phase one” of the peace plan, which will see captives exchanged and Israel withdraw from parts of Gaza. US President Donald Trump had proposed the 20-point peace plan to end the war in Gaza. Read more

    US sanctions 9 Indian companies over alleged participation in Iran’s energy trade

    The United States has sanctioned nine India-based companies and eight Indian nationals for engaging in the trade of Iranian oil, petroleum products, and petrochemicals. The Indian companies sanctioned by the US on Thursday are Mumbai-based firms CJ Shah & Co, Chemovick, Mody Chem, Paarichem Resources, Indisol Marketing, Haresh Petrochem, and Shiv Texchem, and Delhi-based BK Sales Corporation. According to the US, the latest action is targeted at a network moving hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of Iranian LPG in violation of the sanctions. Read more

    Delhi AQI slips to ‘moderately polluted’ category

    Ahead of the winter setting in, Delhi air quality on Friday slipped to the ‘moderately polluted’ category, with an AQI of 129, according to the Air Quality Early Warning System (EWS) for Delhi. The most polluted region on Friday morning was PUSA (198), followed by Mathura Road (173). A host of factors, including stubble burning in the neighbouring Haryana and Punjab and vehicular emissions, and bursting of firecrackers, are blamed for the poor air quality in Delhi during summers.     Centre notifies first legally binding emission targets for high-polluting sectors

    The Centre has notified the first legally binding Greenhouse Gas Emission Intensity (GEI) Target Rules, 2025, for four high-emission sectors—aluminium, cement, chlor-alkali, and pulp and paper. The Rules set targets on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions per unit of product output—for example, the gases released in the production of a tonne of cement or aluminium. Industries will earn carbon credits in lieu of meeting emissions targets, while those that fail to do so will have to buy credits or pay environmental compensation. Read more

    Jaishankar meets Afghan FM, announces upgrade of Indian embassy in Kabul

    External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said Friday India will upgrade its current “technical mission” to an Indian embassy in Kabul. During his meeting with the visiting Taliban-ruled Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, Jaishankar also outlined India’s approach to Afghanistan and said New Delhi has a deep interest in the neighbouring country’s “development and progress”. India had closed its embassy in Afghanistan four years ago when the Taliban took over the country in August 2021. Read more
