Charubala Haokip, wife of former Saikul MLA Yamthong Haokip, died after a bomb explosion at their home in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district, police said on Sunday.
Charubala Haokip, 59, was from the Meitei community and living at Ekou Mulam in the Kuki-Zomi-dominated Kangpokpi district. Yamthong Haokip, 64, won the Saikul seat twice–in 2012 and 2017, both on Congress tickets. He switched to the BJP ahead of the 2022 Assembly elections.
A police officer from Kangpokpi district said the incident took place around 3 pm on Saturday afternoon but was reported early on Sunday morning. He stated that a locally made IED had been placed among waste material at the house.
“When the deceased burned the waste material, it exploded. Everybody else is okay. There are no other fatalities or injuries,” he said.
No arrests had been made as of Sunday morning.
The police officer said it was suspected that the attack was the fallout of a family dispute.
“The former MLA had purchased some land adjacent to one of his uncles’ grandsons and there was a dispute. We suspect this was related to that. We are investigating the matter,” he said.
