Rahul Gandhi also said that Milind Deora and Ashok Chavan quitting the party was not a big issue and the Congress stood united.

Targeting the BJP and the Prime Minister, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi Friday described the electoral bond scheme as “the world’s biggest extortion racket” while his party president Mallikarjun Kharge demanded a high-level probe by the Supreme Court against the ruling BJP and freezing of its bank accounts.

Congress leader and former Union Minister P Chidambaram said the bond scheme was devised to “legalise bribery” and ensure that the ruling party ends up as its biggest beneficiary.

Addressing a press conference a day after the Election Commission released the list of those who purchased the bonds, Kharge said the data shows that the BJP received 50 per cent of the total electoral bond money while the Congress got only 11 per cent of the funds.

“There are many dubious donors. Who are these people? Which companies are these? Why have so many companies donated only after ED, I-T and CBI raids? Who exerted pressure on such companies? We demand the highest level of enquiry by the Supreme Court to investigate this saga of corruption by the BJP,” he said.

“Along with an inquiry, we demand that the bank accounts of BJP should be frozen with immediate effect due to the illegal nature of the funds received through the electoral bonds scheme,” he said.

Rahul Gandhi, addressing a press conference at Bhiwandi near Mumbai, said, “It is nothing but the biggest extortion racket and corruption scandal in the world. It is a means of taking shares from corporates… giving them contracts to take hafta from them. The (poll bonds) list has shell companies and those pressured by the CBI and ED.”

“It turns out that this is a way of extorting money from India’s largest corporates, it is a way of stealing money from the biggest contracts in the country. It is a way of intimidating corporates and forcing them to give money to the BJP. So it is the world’s biggest corruption scam, it is the world’s biggest extortion racket and it is run by the Prime Minister of India.”

On being reminded that Opposition parties too received funds through electoral bonds, Gandhi said, “None of the Opposition parties have access to contracts at the national level. None of the Opposition parties are giving highway and defence contracts to these people. None of the Opposition parties are controlling the CBI, Income Tax department… These are all controlled directly by the BJP and the PM and what we are seeing is criminal extortion from corporate India. Every single corporate knows this. They are scared.”

Gandhi claimed that the money received by the BJP was used to bring down state governments across the country. “Shiv Sena and the NCP were broken using that money. Entire Maharashtra knows that the money was given to break these parties. This (electoral bonds) is where the money has come from,” he said.
