Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the Nagpur centre of Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Maharashtra’s first, on Sunday, hoping that it would emerge as one of Indian’s best management institute.

Proposed in October last year, IIM-Nagpur became a reality within a short period of ten months with clearances moving fast to facilitate the beginning of the first batch from the current academic session.

A batch of 60 students will undertake their studies on the makeshift premises of Visveswaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT). About 293 acres of land has been allotted for institute’s infrastructure in Mihan industrial area.

Fadnavis said that infrastructure alone doesn’t make great institutions. It is the bright talent and faculties that together contribute to making of a great institution.

Greeting the first batch for having chosen Nagpur as their centre, Fadnavis assured that he would make their stay comfortable in the city.

The CM said, “With more institutions like IIT, Central Power Research Institute (CPRI) and AIIMS set to come to Nagpur soon, the city will become an educational hub having the magnetic pull for industries, much the same way as Mumbai and Pune have done in the past.”

To be mentored by IIM-Ahemdabad, IIM-Nagpur is set to have its own independent command structure within three years, according to IIM-A director Ashish Nanda. Nanda thanked the Maharashtra government for quickly rolling out the administrative process to facilitate the beginning of first academic session in time.
