The offices of Amnesty International in Bengaluru were raided by the Enforcement Directorate, news agency PTI reported on Thursday. Officials said they conducted searches at two locations in connection with a foreign exchange contravention case against the human rights watchdog

Amnesty International is a London-based NGO which was founded in 1961. Amnesty International has a presence in over 150 countries with 7 million members, according to its website.

The ED, they said, is looking at a possible and alleged violation of the FEMA linked to an earlier Union home ministry’s probe into the NGO’s accounts related to Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) funds.

The agency, sometimes back, has frozen over a dozen bank accounts of environmental NGO Greenpeace and its linked entity after it conducted searches at their premises in Bengaluru on charges of alleged forex violations.

Earlier this month, the ED had carried out searches at the premises of another international NGO, Greenpeace, in Bengaluru for alleged forex violations. The central agency has also frozen over a dozen bank accounts of Greenpeace.

Greenpeace denied the allegations, saying: “Every rupee that goes into Greenpeace India’s environmental work is a donation made by ecologically conscious people in the country.”
