The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday arrested Haryana Congress MLA Surender Panwar in connection with an illegal mining case. Panwar’s arrest came two days after the central agency conducted searches at the premises of Congress MLA from Mahendragarh, Rao Dan Singh.

Panwar is an MLA from Sonipat and runs mining operations in Haryana and Rajasthan. His son was also taken in for questioning by the ED team that reached his residence on Saturday morning.

The ED is investigating multiple First Information Reports (FIRs) registered by the Haryana Police in the past related to illegal mining in Yamunanagar, Sonipat and several other districts.

In January, the ED had searched Panwar’s residence in Sonipat’s Sector 15 and multiple locations linked to former Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) MLA Dilbag Singh. The ED had also recovered Rs 5 crore cash, foreign-made arms and as many as 300 cartridges after the searches.

According to ED sources, several incriminating documents indicating alleged money laundering were also recovered from Panwar’s residence after which he was taken into custody.

Panwar won the Sonipat Assembly seat in 2019 defeating BJP’s Kavita Jain. While Panwar got 59.51 per cent of the total votes polled, Kavita Jain had got 34.88 per cent votes.
