NSE, BSE Muhurat Trading Time 2025: The countdown to Diwali has started, and all investors are looking for when Diwali Muhurat trading will take place. It’s considered a special trading period, held annually, tied to Diwali celebrations, which investors look forward to and regard as an auspicious time for new investments.
The Indian Stock Exchanges—Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE)—open for an hour on this day, allowing investors to execute symbolic trades that signal the start of the new fiscal year according to the Hindu lunar calendar, Samvat.
The term ‘muhurat’ refers to an auspicious time in the Hindu calendar, a window believed to bring prosperity and good fortune, and trades placed during muhurat trading are really executed and settled under normal market rules.
The practice began in 1957, when the BSE established muhurat trading to coincide with the Diwali ceremony of chopda pujan, which involves creating new account books.
For decades before that, business families in Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra celebrated Diwali as the beginning of a new fiscal year; however, when modern-day stock exchanges took over from traditional trading floors, the practice was modified rather than abandoned.
The NSE later embraced the practice, ensuring that the ceremony endured even in a world dominated by terminals and tickers.
For 2025, muhurat trade will take place on Tuesday, October 21, and for the first time in years, the session will shift from nighttime to afternoon.
Pre-open session: 1:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m.
The exchanges will be closed for routine trade on Diwali Laxmi Pujan and on October 22 for Balipratipada.
