Music conductor Daniel Barenboim and peace activist Ali Abu Awwad on Thursday were jointly awarded the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development 2023 for promoting amity among the Israeli and Palestinian people.
According to a statement issued by the Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust, the two were awarded for “their outstanding efforts in bringing together the youth and peoples of Israel and the Arab World for a non-violent resolution of the Israel-Palestine conflict by fostering meaningful political and humanitarian dialogue, mutual social and cultural understanding, and peaceful public cooperation through the instruments of music and people’s action”.
Argentine-born Maestro Daniel Barenboim is a classical pianist and conductor, whose work focusses on fostering harmony in West Asia through music. “His friendship and partnership with Palestinian literary scholar Edward Said shaped his vision of a peaceful resolution of Israel-Palestinian conflict through respect, discourse and dialogue,” the statement reads.
