A 35-year-old Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan suffered injuries on his hands and legs while diffusing an improvised explosive device (IED) that went off in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district on Thursday morning.

This is the third such incident in the state this week. A security personnel from Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) was killed in an IED blast in Bijapur district on Monday and two Border Security Force (BSF) personnel were injured in an IED blast in Kanker district on Tuesday.

Thursday’s incident took place around 11.30 am when CRPF constable Ravi Kumar from the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) was defusing the bomb kept on the culvert between Nelasnar-Bangapal villages.

A CRPF team had left their camp around 9.30 am for conducting area domination and search operations. During this, a team member spotted a pressure IED on the side of the road.

Kumar suffered serious fractures and splinter injuries in the incident. He was air-lifted to Raipur for better treatment and sources said he is out of danger. This is the first incident where a CRPF jawan was injured this year. Till now, eight security personnel have been killed fighting Maoists this year. A total of nine security personnel were killed last year fighting Maoists.
