A senior police officer of Uttar Pradesh has sparked a controversy by allegedly advocating for honour killing. In a video clip allegedly recorded by a local journalist, the DIG,Saharanpur,Satish Kumar Mathur is purportedly seen suggesting honour killing to the father, who had gone to seek help to trace his daughter. Mathur was caught saying that if his own sister ever eloped he would kill her or commit suicide.

The state government has directed the IG,Meerut,Jawahar Lal Tripathi to conduct an inquiry and file a fact finding report in this regard, said Additional Director General, law and order,Jagmohan Yadav. He said whatever comment was made is wrong,it is legally wrong and he would not defend it.

On Tuesday,DIG SK Mathur had gone to Prabudha Nagar district for inspection. He met one Shaukeen Mohammad,a resident of Kaserwa village, requesting him to ask policemen to trace his daughter, who was missing. He believed that his daughter was allegedly abducted. A report was filed with the police in this connection.

DIG was caught telling him,“I don’t have magical power to recover your daughter. But if your daughter had eloped then you should be ashamed of it and end your life.

“I would have killed my sister if she had eloped or else I would have committed suicide.” His statement was caught on video camera as some local media persons were present there to cover his visit.

When contacted,DIG Mathur denied to have given any such statement to the media.

The girl, who was reportedly kidnapped, had married a youth and had filed an application in the court,Yadav said, adding,“She intended to live with the youth she married and her family members were threatening her.”
