An undertrial prisoner was shot dead by four people on the premises of the Meerut district court Friday. A tea seller was injured.

Three police teams, including one of the crime branch, have been formed to trace the assailants who killed Nitin alias Ganza while he was being taken to court by two constables.

“The murder seems to be the outcome of a gang war,” Meerut SSP Onkar Singh said.

The undertrial was a resident of Wazidpur village in Baghpat and had 19 cases against him. He is said to be a member of the Udham Singh gang and was being taken to court as a witness in a triple murder case. The two constables allegedly fled after the firing. They have been suspended, Singh said.
